I'm not aware of any law requiring a candidate for office to document citizenship.

The Constitution lays out three eligibility conditions to be considered as a candidate for the presidency (or Veep - 14th Amendment). They are:
-35 years of age
-14 years a resident
-natural born citizen
It is not possible to establish the first and third without birth certificates for the candidates AND their parents (or citizenship papers of the latter). However, there was some contention over whether it was necessary to question Obama's citizenship so repeatedly, as that isn't normally done with presidential candidiates.
