The 26th President of the United States was one of the most dynamic of the Presidents. He was a realist and romantic in foreign affairs and a progressive in domestic policy. He was a nationalist and a moralist.

Elected Vice President in 1900 Roosevelt became president after the assassination of McKinley in Sept. 1901. For seven and half years he strove to balance the interests of the farmers, workers, and business people. He had the image of the trust buster but he preferred continuous regulation of giant corporations to dissolution under the antitrust laws and to that end he drove through Congress legislation creating the Bureau of Corporations. He also made regulation of railroads stronger, supported regulation of the food and drug industries. But, his most significant accomplishments was the transfer of 125 million acres of public land into the forest reserves, the creation of 16 national monuments such as the Muir Woods in CA and the establishment of 51 wildlife refuges. So, did he make a difference? Yes and the next time you go to a National Park you can thank him for making sure it is there for you to see instead of finding a shopping mall.

• Roosevelt's 'fireside chats' - radio broadcasts that he made to share his intentions and progress of those intentions with the American people helped them to understand what he was doing to help them survive the conditions of the Depression. This gained the trust of many Americans that by the time WWII came around they didn't want a change, they wanted the familiar to pull them through the war.
• Franklin Delano Roosevelt was one of the most important people in American history between 1900 and 1940 because he overcame obstacles to become a great leader, and his New Deal economic policies had a great impact on the nation.
• Franklin Roosevelt changed America profoundly. He established the New Deal programs. He probably saved American capitalism, but he changed some of its habits. The New Deal did away with most child labor, regulated the stock market, made bank deposits safe, helped make employers pay their wages to employees, encouraged workers' unions, limited hours of work, helped farmers, brought electricity into rural areas, and gave Americans and old age pension policy called "Social Security." The New Deal made the government an active participant in citizens' lives. In order to put people to work, the New Deal sent young people out of doors and paid them to plant trees, build parks, and fight fires. It paid painters to paint murals, writers to write books and musicians to play and create music. Needy people were given money for food and shelter.

  Not only did Franklin D. Roosevelt establish the New Deal but he also brought a huge confidence during the Great Depression. The Great Depression wasn't only a depression to the people but also to him. He was diagnosed with polio- a serious infectious disease that causes permanent paralysis. His parents trained him not to complain and even when he was in great pain he didn't complain. This terrible illness taught him patience and made him more determined. It made him a stronger president. He gave sureness to American that we, the people, will survive this tragic event and will move on with a better and brighter future. "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself" was Roosevelt's favorite quote during the Great Depression. FDR restored American confidence and created a sense of optimism in the midst of the Depression. He always sounded hopeful that things would get better and did his best to try and explain what he was doing to try and fix the problem through his fire-side chats over the radio. In doing this, many in America had great confidence in FDR and were highly supportive of him, which is partially why he remains one of the most popular presidents in American history.
