If the gun never had a serial number, it could be what was known as a "tool box" gun. These guns used a frame which hadn't been stamped with a serial number and was assembled by a worker at the plant which manufactured the gun and smuggled out in his tool box.
You can find a list of Colt M1911 and M1911A1 production serial numbers at http://www.coolgunsite.com/pistols/colt%20production.htm. Going by the numbers in your question (7071), it looks like you have a M1911 that was made for the Navy in 1912, the first year of production.

The the first ones were manufactured in Spain, then Germany followed suit. China manufactured unlicenced copies of the Spanish pistols, and the Brazilians manufactured a modified variant of the German pistols.
