The Constitution Act of 1852 granted self-government to the Colony of New Zealand. The act, created by the Parliament of the United Kingdom was the second such act, since the precious Act of 1846 was not fully implemented.
The first parliament in New Zealand was called the 1st New Zealand Parliament. It commenced in 1854, two years after the British colonial power sought to give the colony representative government by enacting the New Zealand Constitution Act of 1852.

The first government elected along party political lines, resulting in a Liberal government, was not formed until January 1891 following the general election held on 27 November 1890 (for Maori voters) and on 5 December 1890 (for European voters).
