Toothpaste is an alkali because it's pH is greater than 7. If a substance's pH is greater than 7 it is an alkali. If it is below 7 it is an acid. If it is 7 it is a neutral. The reason why toothpaste is alkaline is due to the fact that when the food in our mouth is decompose, a kind of acid is form. Thus, the toothpaste need to be an alkali in order for the acid to be neutralized, so our teeth will not corrode.
