One of the most famous severe thunderstorms took place in Moore, Oklahoma on May 3, 1999 when an F5 tornado ripped through the area. This tornado was measured to have wind speeds of 318 mph, according to the "Doppler on Wheels" used by Dr. Josh Wurman. These were the strongest winds ever recorded on Earth.
