For example on a windows PC you hold down the alt key and press the F4 key, the window that is on top will be closed. If you carry on with this sequence until all you windows are closed, the next time you do it, will then take you into the shut down mode.

∙ 15y agoThe function of the "Alt" keys hasn't changed much, they are still used for the same purpose as they did when they were first introduced.
They allow multiple combinations of keys in a sequence to achieve different results.
"Ctr Alt Del" is different from "Ctrl Esc", "Alt F4" is different from "Ctrl F4" and so on.
Back in the early days when there were no mice you learnt many different key sequences to work more efficiently. WordPerfect 5 and below used "F7" for exit, but "shift F7" for print, and "Alt F7" for columns/Table.
In Windows "Alt Tab" switches between programs, but in Linux "Ctrl Alt (1-9)" changes to a different prompt window.

- And It is used in some games as crouch/duck.
