They are camouflaged so that predators looking up from below, such as a seal beneath the ice, cannot tell the difference between the belly of the penguin and the surrounding ice, snow or water; their black plumage disguises them from predators above them in the water as it looks like the depths of the ocean. Their wings have become like flippers, allowing them to move at incredible speeds through the water. Their feathers can trap air bubbles to make them buoyant and stop them from sinking too low unwillingly. Emperor Penguins can dive for 22 minutes at depths of up to 565m when hunting, making them the species of Penguin that can dive the deepest and for the longest time. They can use their wings and tails as balance when upright so they can look for predators. Emperor Penguins have the largest body mass of all penguins, which reduces surface area and, therefore, heat loss in the arctic conditions. They have webbed feet which spreads their weight out on the snow and acts like snow shoes, stopping them from sinking beneath the snow.

Adaptations of Royal Penguins include:

  • They have blubber which can protect them from the cold.
  • They have special adaptations that allow them to live in the water such as webbed feet to help them swim faster.
  • Their wings are also adapted to help them live and dive in the water. Their wing bones are fused straight, rather than angled like a flying bird's, and this has the effect of making the wing rigid and powerful, like a flipper. The small wings and a streamlined body shape are ideal for diving in water.
  • Their vision is believed to be better underwater than on land.
  • Unlike the majority of other birds, they do not have hollow bones. The solid bones act as ballast to help them dive and, being solid, they are less prone to breakage from the stresses of swimming.
  • Royal Penguins have higher levels of myoglobin optimised for the aquatic environment. Myoglobin is the main way penguins store oxygen during their long dives.
  • Their feathers are short and packed together tightly, overlapping, to keep water away from the skin and to create a smooth surface to lower drag. Their feathers are coated with oil from a gland near the tail to increase the "waterproof" factor. They have a downy underlayer of feathers which traps air against the skin. This layer of air is warmed by the penguin's body heat.
  • The Royal Penguin's colouring is also an adaptation. When they are swimming, they are effectively camouflaged from below due to their white bellies, so that predators cannot see them as easily. In addition, it helps to hide them well from the fish they hunt. The black feathers on a penguin's back absorb sunlight, warming them up even when they are on cold ice.
  • Royal Penguins have small glands under the skin above their eyes, and these glands help them filter out the excess salt from the ocean water. It causes the salt to drip down their beak, from where the penguins are able to shake it off.
