It could mean many things, most likely it will go away on its own but you will need to have a pap every six months to keep an eye on it. If its at a higher level then they may have to freeze those cells off. It could be the hpv virus or it could be signs of Cervical cancer. Please keep up with your doctor and have it checked regularly. Answer They will check again using a dye to determine the severity. If severe they will do a biopsy.

It does not mean you have cancer. It may mean you have an infection, or you may have changed cells which could become cancer one day. You should have a repeat smear in 3-6 months have a colposcopy so the ob/gyn can have a closer look. You may need a little operation to remove them but I REPEAT it does NOT mean you have cancer. That is why we have pap smears, so any little problems can be found BEFORE they become big problems. Women of any age that still have periods should not get a pap smear done just before they start their period because it can cause a false reading.

I am also a woman with abnormal cells and i just learned that I may have cervical cancer. please get checked out. My abnormal cells are coming from a virus called hpv. Ask your doctor to do a test for hpv a lot of times there is no symptoms for the virus. This why we have pap smears. They find abnormal cells before they go on to become cancer. Sometimes they go back to normal and sometimes they have to be treated. Treatment can be by laser or a small operation. There is no reason to worry excessively as treatment can be done very simply. This is why it is so important to have smears done regularly. Lots of women can have abnormal cells and have another test and it's fine. Women often don't know that just before you start your periods you SHOULD NEVER go in for a pap smear because it will almost always show abnormal cells. Go after you have finished your periods. As the above poster stated it's a good idea to have your pap smear every year.
It could mean that you have a yeast infection.
It means you need to go back for more tests. Keep your appointment, its very important for your continued health.

A Pap smear allows your doctor to look at the cells from your cervix (the lower part of your womb) and see if there are any problems. An abnormal Pap smear means that the cells of your cervix have shown some slightly abnormal changes.

Just means that there could possibly be a problem (precancerous cells on your cervix) or just an infection going on... I've had abnormal pap readings caused from multiple things such as chlamydia, bv infection, and hpv. They usually perform a colposcopy to check your cervix for abnormal areas and if the doc doesn't see anything too serious then they don't take a biopsy of the abnormal area.

There are many kinds of abnormal pap smears. The point of the pap smear is the detection of abnormal, precancerous cells on the cervix. Occasionally, other abnormalities are found. If you're worried about your pap smear result, ask your health care provider for more information about your specific case. Some abnormalities require only routine followup in three to five years; others require other types of testing done within months of the smear.

An atypical pap smear is one in which the cells are not thought to be cancerous or precancerous, but can't be called normal, either. The health care provider will recommend followup based on the patient's health history and age.

When a pap smear returns with abnormal cells, the prognosis that can be made is that the woman has cervical dysplasia. This can be caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV).

Does the NuvaRing need to be removed for a pap smear?

No, it does not need to be removed for a Pap smear. The annual gyn exam and testing can be done with the Nuva Ring in place. Not that I know of. I have had a pap smear done with it in. It may just be the practitioner's preference. If so, then she/he can probably remove and place it back immediately after the exam. But I would leave it in and inform my practitioner.
