The red, brown, yellow and green colors of algae help them blend in with the colors of the ocean floor,so they won't be found or eaten by their predators. Algae have special cells which make these colors appear so they can better use the light energy available to them while under water for photosynthesis.
Another view: It is likely that the different pigments in algae allow them to compete for different wavelengths of light, either when crowded or when in different environments. Some algae have developed holdfasts to anchor them in place.
