Having a serial port allows you to plug more stuff in you computer. i think The serial technology and the parallel technology are now old technology because of hardware like USB and Firewire. They are ports on the back of your computer. Serial ports transfers bits one at a time in a single file one bit at a time. Parallel ports transfers data 8 bits are a time across 8 wires. There are still serial ports on your computer, a serial port comes in 9 and 15 pins and is a male. Things that used to and sometimes still do connect to them are mice, external modems, PDAs and cameras. Parallel ports have 25 pins and is female. Most the time printers used to connect to parallel ports.

In computers, ports are used mainly for two reasons: Device control and communication. We can program PC's Parallel ports for both. Parallel ports are mainly meant for connecting the printer to the PC. But we can program this port for many more applications beyond that.

A serial port consists of only 2 wires for the data, which is sent serially, ie. one bit at a time, one after the other, very fast.

The advantage is, that the cable is very small, thin, light and cheap.

A parallel port sends the data as whole bytes and so needs several wires, for each bit. The idea being that the data can be sent faster as whole chunks of code can be sent. ie. in parallel. Extra wires are also needed for whats known as 'Hand shaking', making the computer ready to send or receive each byte.

The cables, plugs and sockets are huge and expensive.

Modern advances in very high speed processors, makes the sending of data serially more commercially viable than parallel. New methods of sending data at insane speeds, have been deveoped by more efficient error correction programs and fast switching transistors.

In Parallel Transmission, every bit needs a wire to transfer data from one place to another. For instance, n number of bits need n number of wires.

Advantage: Its transfer speed is theoretically higher than with serial, since entire bytes or more can be transmitted at once.

Disadvantages: Cross-talk can be a problem at higher rates of speed. That is why PATA drives cannot be clocked past 133 MB/S. Also, there can be many wires, and the more wires involved, and the higher the speed, the more cross-talk. Also, if the wires are of different lengths, signals can get out of sync, and the bits can become skewed.

In Serial Transmission, one bit follows other,so we need only one communication channel rather than n to transmit data between two communicating devices.

Advantages: Since it uses only one communication channel, it reduces the cost of transmission over parallel by roughly a factor of n. Cross-talk and skewing are not problems since the data is transmitted on only 1-2 signal wires.

Disadvantage: In theory, it is slower than for parallel transmission. However, due to a lack of cross-talk, it can be clocked much faster.
