north pole. the compass has amagnetic needle who's south pole points towards south

pole ( actual north pole) & north pole points towards the north pole ( actual south pole ).

=================================

Answer #2 (an attempt to actually answer the question):

The magnetic compass is used for the purpose of showing the direction toward

the Earth's magnetic poles from where the compass is located. This was the only

indication of direction available throughout most of the history of human navigation,

and is still commonly used for navigation and direction finding where extreme precision

and accuracy are not required.

The function of a compass is to display the direction of the earth's magnetic pole,

starting from your present location. If you're lucky, that direction is reasonably

close to the true North direction.

If you're not so lucky, but smart. you will have looked up the difference between magnetic north and true north for your approximate location, so even though the compass isn't pointing true north you can figure out which direction true north is.
