The changes in pressure can be measured and stored as numbers. These numbers can then be read back and converted back into sound waves. There are several methods by which sounds can be converted to numbers and back to sounds. In any case, the numbers are recorded to a device that can store them. To retrieve the files, they are given names which indicate what method of conversion was used to create, and therefore translate the file back into sound.
There are many sound-file formats. The most common are: AAC, AIF, MP3, and WAV. Each format has advantages and disadvantages related to the quality of the sound they produce, and the amount of space they take up when stored.
So, digital audio files are collections of numbers that can be converted into sounds.
