There have been many "types" of elves under consideration over time, but the most common these days seem to be those pictured in The Lord of the Rings. In the books, these are depicted as most often being tall and fair, with dark hair and pointed ears.

They have an inhuman ability to seem young (due to their spiritedness and youthful appearance) and old (due to their long years, maturity, and understanding) at the same time. They are merry yet sad because they know joys of Middle Earth are passing for them.

They are excellent in their chosen fields, in part because of their subtle magic and in part because of their years of experience. Examples of surpassing excellence from the Elves include singing, dancing, food, drink, ropemaking, boatmaking, weaving, poetry, healing, Archery, etc.

They are lightfooted, nigh impossible to hear walking, and can walk even on snow if wearing proper footwear (not heavy shoes!).

Love food, drink, singing, dancing, poetry, merrymaking, things that grow.

They are also known for going over the Sea.

Other types of Elves include those depicted in Dungeons & Dragons, Warhammer, etc.
