An extremophile is any microbe that thrives in extreme conditions of temperature, pressure, salinity [dissolved salt content], or concentrations of hostile chemicals. Most belong to the kingdom Archaebacteria, and most Archaebacteria are extremophiles.

There are actually few extremophiles that are macroscopic instead of microscopic. While we may identify these mysteries of life as "extreme", perhaps this is considered normal on other planets. Scientists have had this idea in their heads for years.
