Fight or flight. If a horse is confronted with something potentially dangerous, they either fight (which would include them kicking, bucking, rearing, and biting) or flight (which means they gallop as fast as they can away). I've only ever seen horses run away from potentially harmful situations, but I'm sure they're some brave souls that fight :)

They have fight or flight mode. If they feel annywhere near danger they fly or run away. if there is no way of escaping, it will go into fight mode where the horse will kick bite strike or do anything to survive the situation.

Run first and investigate later. Horses have very strong self-preservation skills, and often choose to run away from a source of danger than fight it. If they have no choice but to fight, they will rear and kick at the source.

Horses have acute hearing, vision and smell, and a strong herd instinct, which makes them enable to quickly detect danger, often before the danger detects them. They can see just about 360 degrees, hear much higher tones than humans, and have a sense of smell that is almost as powerful as a dog's.

But the main survival skill is their ability to run. Horses are built to move, and quite often have no trouble outrunning a predator like a wolf or cougar.

Horses have a fight or flight nature. If they feel threatened they will most likely bolt of to safety, however they can sometimes face a predator and bite of kick.

Horses are also herd animals and if one horse bolts off the rest will likely follow!

they run away from predators or harm, they don't immediately resort to fighting off their prey, but if they don't have a choice, they can kick, rear, and bite the predator
