There probably is some disagreement on what fears are actually "innate," or existing instinctively from the time of birth, but a common list consists of the following:

The Five Innate Human Fears

  • Death
  • Embarrassment
  • Loss of love
  • Rejection
  • Falling (heights)

On the other hand, I have also seen a list of only two hard-wired or innate fears:

  • Loud noises
  • Falling

Whether these fears are innate or not, you might be interested in a recent survey where participants rated their 'worst fears':

The 14 worst human fears (of 3,000 people surveyed)*

Rank Percentage

1. Public speaking 41

2.Heights 32

3. Insects and bugs 22

4. Financial problems 22

5. Deep water 22

6. Sickness 19

7. Death 19

8. Flying 18

9. Loneliness 14

10. Dogs 11

11. Driving/riding in a car 10

12. Darkness 8

13. Elevators 8

14. Escalators 5

Added note to this American survey: "In general, women are far more fearful than men. Twice as many were afraid of heights, insects, deep water, flying or driving in cars; three times as many were frightened of darkness and four times as many were frightened of elevators. They were also more fearful of dogs, getting sick and dying.

Ok, so it doesn't makes it seem like this a male chauvinist survey, it is worth noting that the only fear that men have more often than women is the fear of financial problems."

Heights is not an innate fear. This develops as one gets older as one begins to walk (and fall down) babies who are not walking and are less mobile are placed on a solid surface next to a glass surface they are able to go everywhere on the solid and the glass surface with no fear, as the child gets older and starts to become more active and begins to understand heights these children placed on the two different surfaces will only stay on the solid looking surface and dislike the glass.

Fear of heights is a learnt behaviour, thus is not innate.

What does the phrase human's innate affinity for bloodshed mean?

Innate just means naturallyoccurring in one's mind, affinity usually has the connotation of a seemingly unmerited or natural relationship or desire to, and bloodshed just means killing. So to put all of that together simply, human's innate affinity for bloodshed is people's natural fascination with killing, or man's inherent desire for murder. Hope that is helpful!
