Jokes aside, technology is an amazing educational tool, but like any other tool it must be used in the right way. Spell check can inhibit kids ability to retain spelling skills learned in school. Some teachers get around this by requiring papers to be hand written.

If one has some self discipline they could also write their papers in a program that doesn't use spell check, such as MS Notepad.

Calculators have taken away some kids ability to do basic math in their head. Luckily, I had teachers who reinforced these skills by not allowing calculators on certain tests and by teaching us different methods to do calculations easily without a calculator. Such as using decimal places and dropping zeros to multiply in your head.

25 * 146 might seem like a problem you'd rather not do in your head, but it's actually quite simple. Take 25 and make it 2.5, now multiply 146 by 2. You get 292. Now put this aside and multiple 146 by .5, you get 73. Now add 292 and 73, which is 365. Now simply move the decimal back over, and you have 3,650. Simple, yes? There are multiple ways to break down big problems and do them in your head, even more complex ones like algebra.

So all in all, I stand by technology being a tool to improve education. It's all about how the tool is used. As long as our children have good teachers who know how to incorporate technology into the class room, and not let it run the classroom, we will be fine.
