Objects are the heart of the object-oriented technology. If we think of an object in the real world, such as car, then we can describe a car by its state and its behavior. The state of the car would include the current speed, the type of transmission, whether it is two- or four- wheel drive, whether the lights are on, the current gear, etc. The behavior of the car would include turning, braking, or accelerating.

As with real-world objects, software objects have state and behavior. In programming terms, the state of an object is determined by its data (variables); the behavior by its methods. Thus, a software object combines data and methods into one unit.
