Arrays do not have rows as such. An array is a series of N variables, where each of the N variables can be accessed through a numeric index.

In traditional programming languages, all N elements must share the same data type, and the size of the array (its number N) is constant. This is not always true; more modern languages supply variable-size arrays or arrays that support different types of data helpd by the different elements. However, all arrays share the same key characteristic: each individual element Z can be accessed with an index, typically in the 0...(N-1) range, and each element Z can be accessed in the same time, regardless of the numeric value of that index.

Modern programming languages also support associative arrays, which support non-numeric indices while trying to accomplish the same constant-time performance characteristic.

Traditionally, simple arrays are often visualized as a series of data elements, arranged in a row. For example, an array of four string" elements can be visualized as omelette = [ "eggs", "flour", "milk", "salt" ]; Because each element within one array can itself be an array, an array or arrays can be visualized as a grid of array elements, each addressed through a combination of row and column indices. In this interpretation, a row of an array is a row of N elements (N columns) in a grid of M rows.

In traditional programming languages such as C, all rows in such a two-dimensional array share the same length N, but modern languages support jagged arrays, where rows in a two-dimentional grid of M rows are not required to share the same length N.

The concept of rows and columns applies to two-dimensional arrays only. It may be used with three-dimensional arrays, but there, the terminology is ambiguous. A row- and column-based terminology is not generally useful in a Z-dimensional array where Z > 2.

If you knit one row then pearl the next row using that pattern will your final outcome look the same on both sides?

If you alternate rows (one row knit, one row purl, and repeat), this is stockinette stitch (or stocking stitch). It does NOT look the same on both sides. One side with be smooth (all the stitches look like little V's) and the other side is all small horizontal bumps. If you want it to look the same on both sides, you should probably knit every row (garter stitch) or look up a pattern that is designed to look the same on both sides (like ribbing). http://handmadebyjody.blogspot.com http://handmadebyjody.etsy.com
