I haven't heard or been told that alcohol can cause any diseases but if too much consumed too quickly it can cause poisoning.

A bit more:

As for the answer above, yes, alcohol can cause alcohol poisoning if too much is consumed too quickly. For example, if a 120 pound woman drank an entire fifth in about two hours, that could cause alcohol poisoning, which can be fatal. But there are other diseases that are caused by alcohol, as well, some of which are:

Cirrhosis of the liver is a disease that is quite common among alcoholics, and there is no cure for this. The liver is literally destroyed by the alcohol.

Also, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is common among babies born to mothers who drink while pregnant. This can cause a number of birth defects in the baby, and can even lead to death. If the mother is an alcoholic the baby can suffer withdrawal effects, which is extremely painful for the baby.

Diabetics who drink risk serious complications, some of which can lead to loss of limbs, blindness, and even death.

And, while not a 'disease', alcohol causes stupidity. People who drink often do stupid, dangerous things that they normally wouldn't do when sober. There are now hundreds of thousands of people, if not millions, who are dead because they, or someone else, chose to drink and drive.

A person is not able to make rational, sensible and intelligent decisions while drinking, nor are their reflexes what they need to be while driving.

Also, many people now have and STD (including HIV/AIDS) because they drank, then had unprotected sex. As stated above, a person is not capable of making rational decisions while under the influence of alcohol. This has also led to a high rate of teen pregnancy.
