Some superstitious beliefs or non-factual beliefs about personal hygiene might include:

  • That humans need to remove all body hair for cleanliness. However, having hair protects pores, prevents ingrown hairs, etc.
  • That women need to remove ejaculate from the vagina. Fact: The vagina is 'self-cleaning'. Natural moisture constantly flushes the vagina.
  • That women must douche. Read above.
  • That men must be circumcised. Fact: Although the circumcised penis is less susceptible to disease and irritation, boys can learn proper cleaning of the uncircumcised penis. (Related myth: Babies don't feel circumcision pain-- babies DO feel pain.)
  • That everyone 'must' bathe or shower daily. Fact: Most people can go a couple days without showering and not be offensive to others.
  • Many superstitions and false beliefs exist about sexual contact. The most common is that oral sex is 'not really sexual contact'. Fact: ANY contact between skin and/or mucous membranes like the lips and mouth IS sex.
  • That if a male urinates before sex it will kill sperm. Fact: It does not kill sperm.
  • That if a female urinates after sex she won't get pregnant. Fact: Urination does not kill sperm, and has no effect on sperm in the vagina (which already swam into the uterus before you got to the bathroom). Urination after sex along with drinking water (to make yourself urinate again soon), though, can help prevent urinary tract infections.
