How long is a section of rope? Not knowing the fifth graders ability or what they are reading makes it almost impossible to answer this question. One fifth grader might find it really hard to answer a simple vocabulary question, while another may find it easy to create a comparative study on how the main character life in their graphic novel relates to the founding of our nation.
The real journey here is in finding the level of the reader to begin with.
To start take a close look at the state reading standards for your state in reading then slowly start asking questions based upon the specific strategies stated in the standards to help determine a level of competency. You might also want to take a look at the First Steps reading program geared towards a never ending life long quest to become a competent reader.
