If you mean theater as in the building - they are proscenium, thrust, theater in the round, and created theaters. If you mean styles of performance the most common answer is that there are two - comedy and tragedy.
Amongst numerous Opera genres are - Ballad opera Chamber opera Comic opera Comédie en vaudeville Grand Opera Masque Opera buffa Opera semiseria Opera seria Operetta Opéra bouffe Opéra bouffon Opéra comique Opéra féerie Opéra-Ballet Rescue opera Romantische Opera Savoy opera Singspiel Tragédie en musique Verismo Zarzuela
As is the case with conventional stage drama there are the normal conventions as to comedy and tragedy, etc. Almsot al Grand Opera is in the Tragic mode, comic opera is usually operetta or light opera (For example Gilbert & Sullivan) There are further subdivisions. Oratorio is sometimes called sacred opera but this should be cxarefully understood. There is no acting or stage costuming in oratorio. It is more accurately sacred concert or sacred music in concert form, usually performed in-a church. There are elements of what might be called (Musical drama) certainly very serious in the so-called Stabat Mater which was worked into Lenten church services such as the Stations of the Cross. The music was themed to action, but the acti9on was only hinted at by the plaques illustrationg the progress of the Passion (Of Christ) Ther WA no stage action. ASt times there was a sort of roving audience as the narrator would have to move about the church building, vaguely a forerunner of sequentially llighting up dioramas at museums. The odd thing about the Stabat Mater (roughly standing Mother, nothing to do with stabbing) was almsot the entire sequence was built up on one musical compositon the (Stabat Mater) ist4eslef which is one of the most morbid of religious musical presentations (With his bleeding arms suspended) goes one opening line the drama is such it gets progressively more purple as the litrugical dram wears on. Stbat Mater is not aqn opera but there are possibilities. While on relgious themes there were the two Rock Operas- The successful Jesus Christ, Superstar and the for some reason ill-starred (it folded soon after it opened) Survival of Saint Joan. The Survival of St.Joan was by the group called Smoke Rise. It did not catch on. Hopoe this has been some help- former member of Stevens Academy Dramatic Club of l972, the (Dark Rider) play.
