I would NOT recommend traveling within the city by car. Gas is really expensive and there are not many gas stations. Walking is great because you can see all the sights. If you need to travel longer distances (for example, from Chinatown to the Macy's) you should probably take the subway. Only take the buses if you are familiar with the bus system, as they can be very difficult.
Most New Yorkers do not own cars, instead relying on public transportation to get them where they need to go. The primary mode of transportation is the subway system, which runs through every borough except Staten Island. Buses are also used, but since traffic in the city is so congested, they can be very slow. However, buses can be very helpful when travelling crosstown (west/east) in Manhattan, since most of the subway lines run only north/south through Manhattan. There are also taxis, which are very convenient, but expensive.
New York is very much a walking city; the average New Yorker walks at least a few miles a day. If a destination is less than 20 blocks (about one mile) away, most people just walk there, instead of taking public transportation. Additionally, there is often quite a bit of distance between subway stations. Sometimes, the nearest subway stop is more than half a mile away, so this also contributes to the amount of walking New Yorkers need to do.
There are several modes of transportation in New York City, New York. The public transportation such as the bus line, subway, or ferry are the cheapest. Taking a taxi or walking is also a good choice for traveling around the city.
