Muslim 93.4 % (generally shiites), Russian Orthodox 2.5 %, Armenian Orthodox 2.3 %, other 1.8 %
Shia Muslims are the largest religious group in Azerbaijan. Sunni Muslims are the second largest religious group, and there is a Christian minority comprised of various denominations.
Azerbaijan is a predominantly Muslim country, so it does not have a patron saint. The country's religious practices are influenced by Islam rather than Christian saints.
The dominant religion in Azerbaijan is Islam, but due to the Soviet occupation, most Azeris are rather liberal in their religious outlook, especially when compared to the Azeris in Iran.
The main religion in Azerbaijan is Islam. Muslim people (people who follow the religion of Islam) make up about 95% of Azerbaijan with the Shi'a dominating with 85%.

However, many religious groups, e.g. islamic extremists, are supported by rich sources in Iran, Turkey, and Arab world, gradually expanding their influence, especially amonth the poor, young males.

Azerbaijan is rich
Azerbaijan is where the Azeri's live. They speak a language close to Turkish, but at the same time they are kept at some distance by the Turks because they are in the majority Shi'ites. Unlike Iran, the basis of modern, secular Turkey is national - not religious - identity. Shi'ism in Azerbaijan has had to deal with a society secularized by seven decades of Soviet rule. While it is true that Azeri mullahs are "Iranified", it is also true that an independent Azerbaijan fears too much Iranization. At the same time, Iran does not push too hard for Shi'ite influence on Azerbaijan because Azeri nationalism could conceivably embark on a reunification of Azerbaijan to the benefit of Baku, and not of Tehran.
