The Colosseum was a multi-purpose arena in which almost every type of entertainment was presented. The audiences were treated to wild animal hunts, public executions, the distribution of gifts, various types of pageantry in connection with some anniversary or festival, naval battles, religious parades and of course, gladiatorial bouts.

The games at the Colosseum lasted for the whole day or for several days. They started at 8 am and ended at dusk. The schedule of the day was:

Displays of exotic animals

Animal hunts which replicated hunting scenes

Comic acts with clowns and dwarfs

Acrobatic and gymnastic acts

Tightrope walking

Music and dances

Animal acts similar to those at the circus

Tortures and executions

Wrestling

Boxing

Martial fights

Gladiatorial fights which were the highlight of the day
