The Colosseum was a multi-purpose arena in which almost every type of entertainment was presented. The audiences were treated to wild animal hunts, public executions, the distribution of gifts, various types of pageantry in connection with some anniversary or festival, naval battles, religious parades and of course, gladiatorial bouts.
The games at the Colosseum lasted for the whole day or for several days. They started at 8 am and ended at dusk. The schedule of the day was:

Music and dances
Animal acts similar to those at the circus

Construction of the Roman Coliseum began between 70 and 72 AD and is considered one of the greatest works of Roman engineering and architecture. The Coliseum was completed around 80 AD and was used for gladiator battles, mock sea battles, and many other events until the early medieval era.

in 847 an earthquake hit the city of Rome shattering the roman coliseum. Parts of the arena fell of due to this and since the coliseum was made with the finest stone the remaining pieces were used to make other structures
