Like Americans, the Romans loved comedy, political satire, and violent sports. They were capitalists with social stratification based on wealth, and they had a large and powerful regular army. The family unit was very important to them, and it was considered a basis of Roman strength and virtue. They believed in an afterlife, and they were very tolerant of other religions (at least those which did not allow human sacrifice). They were great builders of roads, monuments, and other public works. These are a few similarities, but there are many others.
The Romans and the Greeks shared the same gods, though under different names. They had similar, though not identical outlooks on the world. They both believed that their cultures were superior to all other cultures, allowing them to refer to outsiders as Barbarians. They both developed a slave culture in which wealthy citizens bought and sold slaves for manual labor, for crafts and skills, and, sometimes as the educators of the young.
