Hi, if you've never been involved in tourism or hotels positions, front desk means the area where you have to "check in" or "check out" in a hotel. This area is always next to the lobby. When you get into a hotel, you will see the lobby (usually many persons sit taking a drink, getting tours information, just waiting for departure time or people who has arrived). In any part around the lobby, you'll see probably some people on a line waiting to "check in", that space is called front desk and all persons inside front desk are the front desk staff. They have to fill up a registry with the visitors informations, then give them general information, the room key and.... "Next" hoho. If you are a spanish speaker front desk means "Recepcion", and front desk staff "Recepcionistas o personal de recepción". English speakers don't call them reception or recepcionist because these two apply for offices, medical institutions, etc where there is a person giving some information about the place. That's the difference, in psanish we call reception or receptionist to all of them, no matter if it's a hotel or a hospital. I expect this helps, greetings...
