Mark 12: 28-31:
"One of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, perceiving that He had answered them well, asked Him, "Which is the first commandment of all?" Jesus answered him, "The first of all the commandments is: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."
Actually Jesus gave many commandments.
There is the command / mandate that Christ's disciples are to: "GO, and make disciples - - Teaching them". Matthew 28:20 states to teach them "ALL the things Christ COMMANDED." Therefore Christ commanded MANY things; not just 2 things.
But here are a couple: "do unto others" -- "Do not judge".
Matthew {22:36} Master, which [is] the great commandment in the law? {22:37} Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. {22:38} This is the first and great commandment. {22:39} And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. {22:40} On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
In the gospel of Matthew, chapter 22:34-38), it says:
34 After the Pharisees heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they came together in one group. 35And one of them, versed in the Law, asked, testing him: 36"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" 37He said to him: "'You must love Jehovah your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind.' 38 This is the greatest and first commandment.
And again, in Matthew 22:39-40:
39 The second, like it, is this, 'You must love your neighbor as yourself.' 40 On these two commandments the whole Law hangs, and the Prophets."
It should be noted that both of these commandments come directly from Judaism, which is not unusual since Jesus was Jewish.
Jesus said all of God's commandments (10 commandments) could be summed up in these two:
Love God
Love your neighbour.
Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus answered, " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the greatest and the most important commandment. The second most important commandment is like it: 'Love your neighbor as you love yourself.' The whole Law of Moses and the teachings of the prophets depend on these two commandments."
thou shalt love the lord thy god with with all thy heart and with all thy soul with all thy mind and with all thy strength
thou shalt thy neighbor as thyself
Love God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself.
1. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength. 2. Love your neighbor as yourself.
Two Great Commandments
Yes, the great commandment to love God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and to love your neighbor as yourself, is seen by many as summarizing the entire moral law, including the Ten Commandments. Jesus himself taught that all the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.
Matthew 22:36-40
It is primarily found in the two great commandments given to us by Jesus. The first is to love God above all else. The second is to love your neighbor as yourself. The two great commandments are, essentially, a summation of the 10 commandments. The first 3 commandments correspond to the first great commandment and the last 7 commandments correspond to the 2nd great commandment. Please see the following biblical passages for the scriptural evidence of the 2 great commandments: Matthew 22:34-40 Luke 10:25-28 Mark 12:28-34
The connection between them is simply love.
At Matthew 22:37, Jesus said that the whole law hangs on these two greatest commandments: that we must love GOD with your whole heart, soul, and mind; and we must each love our neighbor as ourself.
Jesus didn't give the commandments to his disciples. God gave the commandments to Moses this is recorded in the Old Testament. Jesus did tell his disciples that basically there are only two commandments: 1. Love the LORD your God. 2. Love your neighbour as yourself.
Matthew 22:35-40 - Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?"Jesus said to him, " 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets."[NKJV]
The Two Great Commandments are to love the Lord and to love thy Neighbor. For Mother Teresa to have helped all of those in the slums of Calcutta she would have had to love each and every one of them in their own way. As far as loving the Lord. That is only something Mother Teresa and God can answer.
jesus was teaching people about the to respect god and his commandments
Matthew 22:37-40 - Jesus said to him, " 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." [NKJV]The natural outcome of their keeping is compliance with all others. That's why Jesus said all the Law and the Prophets "hang" on these two.
Wow. Great question. But it seems there are no Christian teachers who are willing to answer it. Shame on them. I just suspect that they are afraid there are more commandments in the NT than in the OT (613). Answer: more than 1000.
