Algae can be used to capture the runoff fertilizers that enter lakes and streams from nearby farms. Algae is used by some powerplants to reduce CO2 emissions. The CO2 is pumped into a pond, or some kind of tank, on which the algae feed."

Due to rapid reproduction, algae sometimes block sunlight from reaching the aquatic plants, which results in their deaths. Algae growing in water may cause the death of aquatic animals due to strangulation. The process of deriving biofuel from algae is expensive and requires constant temperatures and, therefore, cannot be fully taken advantage of.
