This often occurs in the elderly, and osteoporosis is the culprit. following the acute event (usually from a fall in a person with osteoporosis [softening of the spine AND hip bones from a lost of calcium the bones] there is usually onset of severe Back pain for several weeks as well as constipation from a reaction of the bowels from the pain. After several weeks the pain slowly begins to go away and the bowels begin to function normally. Men as well as women (women more than men) suffer from osteoporosis due to the loss of bone mass (bone structure); taking 1200 - 1400 mg of calcium a day WITH VITAMIN D, 400 - 600 International Units (Established by the National Academy of Sciences) gradually builds up the strength of the bone (spine and hips)... They haven't figured out how much Vitamin D is too much, but the minimum (above) helps with calcium uptake into the bones. It has recently been found to help in cardiac health as well...
