If you're unable to do this, then perhaps the military is not the ideal choice for you. As for whether or not you actually will see any direct contact with the enemy, most troops deployed in the last operational campaigns were support troops who did not see such contact - but this isn't to say that none of them have.
As for choosing your occupation, yes and no... it really depends on 1: what's available at the time - some occupation have a very low turnover rate, and so slots don't open as regularly as they do in other occupations - 2: what you're qualified for, based on your ASVAB test results, and 3: your ability to complete the Initial Entry Training for that occupation.
