Underdeveloped (or in economics terms less-developed) country is simply one where the resources of the area are not used to their full potential due to the lack of another resource. Typically you would cite the African wealth of minerals and lack of technology and machinery.

Characteristics of Underdeveloped Economy are given below:

  1. Low per capita income.
  2. Low standard of living.
  3. Existence of widespread poverty.
  4. Large inequalities.
  5. Predominance of agriculture as a source of employment.
  6. Higher contribution of agriculture in National Income.
  7. High rate of population growth.
  8. Existence of large unemployment.
  9. Low rate of saving and capital formation.
  10. Inadequate infrastructural facilities.
  11. Use of traditional and less efficient techniques of production.
  12. Poor quality of human capital, low literacy ratio, low level of education, inadequate availability of health facilities and poor sanitation facilities.
