Lake Tansi, in Cumberland County, Tennessee is claimed by some to be the cleanest lake in the state. It is a man made, five hundred fifty acre lake that rests on a bed of limestone in a private community.

If you search carefully you may be able to find several lakes in its class of cleanliness. You may also be told that several different lakes are the cleanest lake.

Tennessee has numerous lakes that range greatly in their cleanliness. The immense government made TVA lakes that flood the rivers have a wide range in their level of cleanliness as well.

In turn, there are hundreds of lakes that are not on the rivers. The lakes on the Cumberland Plateau tend to be the cleaner and clearer lakes because they rest on limestone. Also, these lakes do not ride up and down in their banks with the seasons as the TVA lakes do.

I live on TVA's Watts Bar Lake on the Tennessee River in Roane County. The lake has 770 miles of shoreline and more than 39,000 acres of surface. You could not explore the entire lake in a very long lifetime. It is very nice to live on. This type of lake is big enough for large sailing yachts and most any other water sport. However, it is not clear enough to enjoy Scuba diving.

The only real drawbacks to living on a TVA lake is that the cleanliness of the lake goes up and down with the seasons, as well as the lake's elevation. Many of TVA's lakes are at full pool all of the spring and summer--but not all of them, so be sure to check a lake you might be interested in. Inevitably the TVA lakes are clearer the closer you get to their dam, so I would look at property closer to the dam on any TVA lake.

If you are wanting to buy property on a lake you will want to know how many feet it rises and falls in the year and if it rises and falls during the summer. There are lakes that are relatively clean that I would not want to live on because of their rise and fall. Some lakes have a very high rise and fall and I would not want to live on a one of them.

Many private lakes are more clean the year around than the cleanest of the TVA lakes, and they also tend to remain at full pool year around. Both of these desirable traits are the result of not being a part of one of the major river systems in the state, which also means they are not managed by TVA. These traits also make it harder to find a lot or house that is available for purchase on these lakes, but it is possible.
