There are several basic type brushes, all with a different use. It's good to have at least one of each. I'll list them in the order of use.

Rubber curry-used in small circular motion to work up dirt and loose hair and the first brush used in the grooming process.

Body brush (sometimes called a mud brush)-This brush has stiffer bristles and works great after the rubber curry has worked up the loose dirt and hair on the horse's coat. The body brush should be used in small, quick wrist 'flicks' and this brings us to the next brush.

metal curry-used with the body brush. After every couple of flicks with the body brush use the metal curry to clean the body brush. The metal curry should not be used on the horse directly.

finishing brush-Also called a face brush, this brush is usually smaller than the body/mud brush and has softer, finer bristles for more sensitive areas like the face and legs where the hair is thinner and a stiffer brush is too harsh. Once the face, legs and stomach has been brushed with the face/finnishing brush, use it to finish the rest of the body after the stiffer body brush. This gets anything left from the body brush and helps shine the hair.

Mane/tail comb or brush-This is self-explainitory, used to untangle the mane and tail. I always use a spray-on detangler so as not to break the hair off.

Polishing rag-This is optional but I always use them and it puts a great shine on the coat and gives the horse a 'finnished' look.

There are all sorts of variations on these basic brushes. Pick the ones that work best for you and your horse. Grooming is essential for your horse's health and it's a wonderful way to bond with your equine friend. As a last thought, don't forget your horse's feet. Pick them daily as part of your grooming routine.

There are many different kinds of grooming tools and brushes. We will put them in the order that you would use them to groom your horse. Start with a rubber curry and work the hair in small circles from the poll (top of horse's head right behind the ears) down the neck all the way to the tail. Repeat on the other side. This loosens old hair and works up dust and dirt. They use a stiff body brush starting at the poll again work the brush with short flicks of your wrist. Repeat other side. Now comes the finishing brush. This brush has softer bristles that are closer together than the body brush. Always start at the poll and work back to the tail, repeat on the other side. Time for the face brush. This one is smaller and has very soft bristles for using on the face, ears and legs. Don't forget to move the straps on the halter and groom under there also. After all this try a soft cotton cloth or 'finishing cloth' and rub the horse with the cloth working from the poll back to the tail. This cloth should give your horse a polished look. Then gently comb out the mane and tail trying not to break the hairs off. There is an old saying and I believe it's true. 'If you finish grooming your horse and you're not sweating you didn't do it right.'

There are many types of brushes:1. Dandy brushes (also called Stiff brush and hard brushes) These are used for heavy mud and grime.

2.. Body brush (also called soft brushes) These lift lighter dirt and are the most used brushes in a grooming kit.

3. Finishing brush: These are brushes with short closely packed bristles that are very soft and bring a shine to the coat.

4. Medium brushes: A version of the stiff brush that is not as hard.

5. Flicker brush ( Also called a sweeper brush.) A brush with extra long bristle to get fine particles out of the coat.

6. Curry comb: These can be made of rubber, plastic or a combination of materials and are used in a circular motion to loosen up grime in the coat and to provide a massage.

7. Mane and Tail combs: These can be regular combs or bristle brushes used to comb out the mane and tail.

8. Pulling comb: This is used to shorten the mane for shows or a general tidy appearance.

9. Hoof brush: These are used to scrub the hooves.
