Usually it is broken down into "periods," like art.

Renaissance

Baroque (Bach, Vivaldi)

Classical (Haydn, Mozart)

Romantic (Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Some of Beethoven)

Impressionism (Debussy, Ravel)

And the rest of 20th century music is broken down into a number of genres/categories...contemporary, modern, minimalist, neo-romantic, postmodern, serialism, atonal...etc.

It can also be broken down by style/instrumentation

Concerto, Concerto Grosso, Sonata, Symphony, String Quartet, Solo, etc.
