A few of the different kinds of identity theft

  1. Identity theft with permission: "Borrowing" someone else's identity card to enable one to do something he otherwise could not, such as buy liquor. This is the most common form of identity theft.
  2. Stealing passport information: Stealing the actual passport, or getting the number of a real passport and making an illegal copy. The thief generally does this for profit; the buyer of the passport then uses it for illegal entry. In a few cases, as many as 14 women have "married" the fake passport holder and gained entry to the United States.
  3. Stealing credit card information: The thief acquires a credit card number, name, expiry date, etc., either from a shop or by hacking a poorly secured online retail site. He then charges the card to the max. They are clever about this.
  4. Stealing an actual credit card: This thief will not only use the card but will use it as ID to open additional accounts.
  5. Impersonation: The thief uses stolen documents to impersonate someone, for profit, revenge, theft, or even just to satisfy mentally ill desires.
