They are largely illusory and Propaganda myths. One will assert there is a need and obvious practical value in segregating physical education classes such as Gym and Swim, as is generally done ( one school I attended did not have a gym- so the classes were held at the YMCA ( boys) and YWCA ( girls) both within easy walking distance and getting there was both part of the fun an exercise ( a stiff walk of a few blocks). In ordinary academia any ( disagvantages) are illusory- one does not have Male and Female Math or English. One interesting hold-out was, again when I was a kid ( c.l967) Sunday-school classes, above a certain level -were gender-discrete. This occured as late , as stated as l967 in the parish of St. Aloysius. This was SOP_ no reasons given. an odd off-shoot is no confirmation candidate was permitted to have a cross-gender sponsor. Sponsors had to be practicing Roman Catholics and not members of the immediate family) a boy had to have two adult male sponsors- no ( Aunt Mary) types. again this was standard practice- no reasons were given.
