Democracy is a form of a government in which the people are the source of authority for the government.

In it the representatives of the people are elected by the voters on the basis of universal adult franchise. It believes in the concept like liberty, equality, and fraternity and these are its functional bases. In it there should be maximum scope for individual and collective development of society and personality. It has the following characteristics:

1) Rule of the people: Administration in democracy is directly or indirectly run by the people and every decision in democracy is being taken by majority.

2) Interest of the people: In democracy, administration is run in the interest of the people and interest of the weaker sections is taken care by the government.

1. People can vote for whoever they want to run the government on the ballot papers.

2. Democracy directly involves the people; they choose who runs the government and when they will step down for the position. They also decide which party will have the most seats in Holyrood and Westminster.

3. Democracy is only ever representative, (one person speaks on behalf of the country/nation) or direct (when people vote in referendums to decide what happens, more directly involved).
