The leaves contain an alkaloid, chloroplatinate. Salted bruised leaves are used to reduce swelling, an extract from the leaves is used for rheumatic baths to reduce pain, and crushed fresh leaves are placed over the nose to treat fainting and hysteria.

Lemon balm, (Melissa officinalis) has many medicinal uses.

Because of its mildness, lemon balm is often used in the treatment of children (and pregnant women) with fevers from a cold or flu, upset stomachs, headaches, and as a mild sedative. It is mild enough for their delicate systems.

For adults it is used to treat headaches, insomnia, upset or "nervous" stomachs. It is said to "stimulate the heart and calm the nerves."

Recent studies show it is effective in the treatment of herpes as well as Grave's disease (hyperthyroidism).

Lemon balm is a great additive to iced teas (crushed leaf) for a light lemony-minty taste or as a infusion (tea) for medicinal purposes.

The crushed leaves can be applied topically to wounds and insect bites, to aid in healing.

The essential oil of Melissa is used in the aromatherapy treatment of depression.
