Dakshin Gangotri was the first scientific base station of India situated in Antarctica.

Dakshin Gangotri was closed in 1989 due to being submerged in snow.
Another one was built, called Maitri around 1988-1989. There is a lake near it called Lake Priyadarshini.
Another one is being planned to be completed around 2012. It is tentatively named as Bharati.

The Russian Space Station Mir which had an estimated 15 years in orbit, far longer than originally planned and then there were the earlier Salyut series of space stations which helped prepare the way for future research work of Mir and the International Space Station.
