The land itself is relatively flat, the highest area being the hill of Montmartre. The area is called le bassin parisien (Paris' basin), being sort of a plain wedged between the surrounding plateaus circing the region (not of a very high elevation themselves, but the "basin" is even lower).
The Seine river (France's second longest river, 777 km) runs in the middle of the city. The shores of the river and the islands have been permanently inhabited during the 2,500 previous years, and the earliest traces of occupation date back to 4,000 BC.
Paris is the French capital and France's largest town (either for the urban area and the city proper). The whole area is urbanized, except for the large woods of Vincennes and Boulogne, on its eastern and western borders.
You find the high-rise buildings in the south-eastern district and in the western business district, but other parts of Paris have a limitation in size for new buildings to protect the character of the city. The central district has more historical or official buildings, including the offices of the presidency and government, the Louvre Museum, the Notre-dame cathedral, the Sacré-Coeur basilica, the Eiffel tower, the Arc de Triomphe (all ranking among the world most visited spots).
Paris, France is known as a very romantic city. It is home to the Eiffel Tower, and the Louvre Museum. Additionally, it has plenty of historic cafes along the Seine River, where famous authors wrote some of their best works.
