One of the main side effects of using steroids for RA is weight gain. Steroids like cortisone etc can be very useful and helpful for the pain and swelling associated with RA, but unfortunately there are side effects that need to be considered and the least amount of steroid should be used to keep side effects to a minimum. Cortisone is often taken daily via an oral tablet, but when daily use is not desired it can also be taken "only when needed" like when going on vacation or when the patient is going to be more active than usual.

∙ 11y agoThe Treatment for JRA is similar to the treatments used for adult rheumatoid arthritis, Inflammation may be brought under control with drugs such as non steroidal anti infantry's, These need to be treated with respect because they can cause problems with the lining of the stomach and should aways be taken with food, Then there are steroidal anti inflammatory such as prednisone, that have an effect on the operation of the immune system making one more prone to infections and colds, There are many other possible reactions that tend to be different with different individuals, And disease modifying drugs like methotrexate and plaquinil which work directly on the immune system in an effort to reduce the inflammation that it causes. There are many side effects but most people only have to put up with a few of them. The best thing to do is to check out the side effects of any particular drug that is suggested or being used as there are too many possibles to include them all here.
