There is a great difference between the apes and hominids. Apes can be found in trees and also on the land while hominids are exclusively terrestrial. Apes are not fully bipedal like the hominids. Hominids also have a unique characteristic that shows pair bonding with another member and also having a home base, where apes lack that certain developmental trait. It has been shown that apes are not very good with food sharing, while hominids have been shown to care and share food with other members of the group. This is also a development of social groups. Hominids such as the Homo habilis, were discovered with the first making and use of tools and also fire. Apes have not found the ability to make and use tools. Scientific studies also show that the apes have a much smaller brain than the hominids resulting in these vast differences between the two groups.

Australopithecus africanus and apes share similarities in their bipedal locomotion, dental morphology, and similar brain sizes relative to body size. Both also exhibit some degree of arboreal adaptation in their anatomy and behavior.

The similarities between Homo erectus and Homo sapiens fall under many categories such as physical, intellectual and social. By its name, Homo erectus, we already know that it is an upright creature that would walk on two legs much like Homo sapiens; this upright posture was offered through a similar limb structure to the Homo sapiens. A further notable similarity between the two is the teeth that are hominin and do not resemble teeth of apes.

Another quality Homo erectus shared with Homo sapiens, and not apes, falls under the category of intelligence. While it is true that some apes are known to employ tools in their day to day lives, their tools are simple things like sticks, twigs, or stones however; Homo erectus is known to be the first to gain a control over fire, seek shelter in caves and create a number of stone tools that fall under the Acheulean category which took place during the lower Palaeolithic periods. This type of stone tool is credited only to Homo sapiens and Homo erectus.

Under the social similarity between Homo erectus and Homo sapiens is simply the tendency to live and hunt in groups.

A human is very different from an ape because an ape`s skin is much darker and a human's, depending on their race, is much lighter. Also, an ape is skilled at climbing trees and surviving in the wild.A human however, has trouble climbing trees, because they are not as stong as an ape.

Their DNA is very similar (more similar than any other primate, except bonobos, which are another species of pan anyway).

They have a common ancestor (the lineage breaks off about 5 million years ago).

They both use tools. Wild chimps have been seen to use tools to obtain more difficult foods in times of food scarcity. But they have also been seen using tools during times of food abundance. (For example, when fruits are plentiful, they sometimes use tools still -- possibly to catch bugs which are plentiful when fruits are plentiful).

The varying levels of task complexity and flexibility in their tool use in multiple contexts suggests that wild chimpanzees are intelligent tool users. Their tool usage differs from other animals such as certain crows that use tools because chimps use more types of tools in more than one situation and also understand that they need to use another tool when the tool that they are using isn't working. Furthermore, they use a series of tools. For example, when extracting honey, first they will beat the beehive with a club, then they will use another tool to pry it apart, and then a third tool to probe the honey out of the beehive.

Both humans and chimps rear young who are dependent on their parents and have to learn survival skills (rather than being naturally programmed with them from birth). They both also learn culture within their group. For example, chimps in different regions complete tasks, such as ant dipping, termite fishing, and nut cracking differently. (They use different learned methods).

There are a lot more. Hopefully some other people can give you some good answers.

According to evolution theorists, they were the same, but diverged, apes not gaining sentience, humans gaining it. Answer:

Answer:

Data indicates that humans split from the ape species when two chromosomes failled to join up correctly leading mankind to have 46 pairs while apes (chimps, gorillas, etc.) had 48 pairs. A recent finding of the Human Genome Project which identifies the exact point of fusion of two primate chromosomes that resulted in human chromosome #2.
