The 'publishing factory' is composed of several separate sub-assemblies.

Pages are then cut to the size defined by the book designer and collated so that the page numbers are in sequence.

Because readers expect that all pages of a book have four equal sides, the three unbound edges are cut so that all the edges are equal.
Once cut to size, the hardbacks, which may have been assembled in a sub-process are attached to the book.
Often weights sit on books for a period, to press the books into neat, compact blocks.
Once the books are dry, they are boxed and shipped to retailers.
Note that some types of books may not pass through all of these steps.
