Elizabeth blackwell wanted to become a doctor in a field dominated by males. A female doctor was unheard of and nearly all the colleges she applied to rejected her. She went out of the country to get an education, and was still harrassed at the college that accepted her (jokingly as some reports have it; the students took a vote to accept her thinking their professor wasn't serious.) After she graduated she returned to America as the first female to graduate med school, but she had a hard time finding work because of her gender. She eventually opened up her own pharmacy and clinic with the help of her sister.
