Most fractures that aren't compound in nature first and foremost hurt like hell; second, they always swell up a lot; and depending on the severity, they may or may not bruise, but usually if the bone is fractured bruising does occur - at least it has in every fracture I've ever had, and that's quite a few.
The only way to determine for sure of course is with an X-ray, but they normally want you to wait until the swelling goes down before taking it as swelling impedes the picture of the bone. Many X-rays in the past that were taken immediately after an injury would show no fracture, but on re-examination and another X-ray after swelling had gone down, the fracture would be seen. That's why today they usually make you wait before taking one if you're swollen as they know the picture won't be as accurate.

A 'hairline' or 'greenstick' fracture are types of partial fractures of bones. A chip may also occur on a bone.
