The Major use of LEDs until recently has been indication. For Example: Power Supply Indication, or Process or progress Indication etc.

In recent years, the light outputs from LEDs has grown and they are becoming common as lighting fixtures. They tend to be much more efficient than tungsten or fluorescent lighting and give off very little heat.

In large scale video applications, they are used in open air television screens. The increase in light output possible with modern LEDs mean they are well suited to imaging applications in high light areas such as open air concerts.

Another very common but little noticed application is in remote controls. Infra-red LEDs are used to transmit signals from remote controls. Although the light is invisible to us, the communication medium is entirely optical. LEDs are also capable of emitting ultra-violet light, another part of the spectrum that is invisible to us.
