Antarctica can be used for peaceful purposes only

No country may build a military base there.

No country may do a nuclear test there.

No country may dump nuclear waste there.

Scientists working there will share their information.

Additional rules are there to protect the penguins and seals.

No dogs may run loose.

No plane may land near large groups of animals.

No guns, explosives and tractors may be used near the animals

The Antarctic Treaty specifies that all land and ice south of 60 degrees S is preserved:

  • For peace, and no military war machine activities are allowed -- Article I.
  • For the scientific study of the health of planet earth as practiced during the International Geophysical Year, which shall continue -- Article II.
  • For sharing all scientific data and resources among signatories (and nations that later ratify the treaty) -- Article III.
